Born
Dec 9, 1942 on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, Roy Lawaetz
is an internationally exhibited artist who has systematically
underpinned his innovative style with his theoretical
writings worldwide.
His Modular Triangular System book published in 2000
presented prototype revelation from the periphery within
the Caribbean’s cultural artifacts and societal
base. Historical reference points that exist in the
Diaspora with new art-thinking have resulted in alternative
visual dialogue. By utilizing triangles in combination,
in daring and unpredictable syntax, he has developed
a unique vocabulary of support formats for painting
that has guaranteed him a niche on the international
scene.
Exhibited and critically acclaimed worldwide, including
new art theory works at the 23rd. Sao Paulo Biennial,
Brazil alongside works by Klee, Picasso, Munch, Warhol,
Goya, Sven Wiig Hansen, others.
Studied in New York City primarily with Victor Candell
and was class monitor, also the Arts Students League
and later with Professor Richard Mortensen, Danish Royal
Academy for Fine Arts, Copenhagen.
Lawaetz is the recipient of many art scholarships, awards
and distinctions and his Caribbean art theory has been
featured in many books, websites and schools as well
as exhibitions in galleries and museums.
In 2009 he participated at the OpenArtCode exhibition,
Salon des Independants, Grand Palais, Paris.
