The first edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art opens its doors in Florence. A city filled with historical links to culture and art - a mix of modern and ancient art.

For the first time is the prestigious award "Lorenzo il Magnifico" given to highly valued artists. This year's laureates for their successful careers were: Ferruccio Soleri - a famous Harlequin who have made careers in the Piccolo Theatre in Milan and Carla Fraccia one of Italy's famous ballerinas from the Scala theatre in Milan. Even Dolores Puthod received award for her contribution as an artist and designer for the Scala theatre in Milan.

This edition of the biennial was no Swedes represented among the 300 artists from 17 countries.
